Indigo, grown and hand dyed on the ranch!
This is a limited quantity item as each lot of dying can yield differing colors. This lot is made from our 100% Alpaca yarn, 3-ply DK weight in a 200 yard skein.
This is my third year growing my own indigo! I have enjoyed nurturing the plants to produce the stunning colors!
In the second year of growing indigo, I learned how to harvest and extract the indigo from the plant. This is a process of fermentation and aeration. After the pigment dries in cakes, I ground it into a powder for storage. This spring, I made my first indigo vat! I have maintained, refreshed and rebalanced the vat as it sits on my kitchen counter. Hand dying yarn in the indigo vat is a process that includes multiple “dips” into the vat followed by aeration.
